• Virtual event: ‘Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan: Bridging the gap in breast cancer care’

    • Date: 15 October 2020
    • Time: 12:00-13:30 CEST
    • Location: Virtual event

Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women in Europe. Despite recent advancements in treatment and survival, it still represents a threat to European citizens and society, as the disparities in treatment and care between and within EU countries remain.

With the Breast Cancer Awareness month approaching and the Cancer Plan still being developed, TBCT members decided to host an online event focusing around the realities of living with early and advanced breast cancer. The event will take place the 15th October from 12:00 to 13:30 aim to raise awareness of unmet need in breast cancer care and facilitate the discussion with EU stakeholders and policymakers around the challenges that breast cancer patients are facing daily and that the Plan needs to address.

Grazia Socca, legal specialist at ECPC, will participate in the event in the panel ‘Addressing an unmet need in breast cancer care’ presenting the project ‘The Right to be forgotten: putting an end to
discrimination’. If you want to know more about the speakers taking part in the event, please click here.

The TBCT initiative wishes to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month and shed the light on currently ongoing initiatives that can serve as the best practice to ensure that Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan brings yet better outcomes to European patients, their families and the society.

    • UICC’S Ageing and Cancer series: #2 Reshaping cancer control for ageing societies

      • Date: Tuesday, 20 October
      • Time: 14.00pm
      • Location: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcsduitqTMuHdxghnEPtEb3VTDcGtzkx_LK

The rapid ageing of populations around the world has important societal, economic and public health implications. While longevity in itself is a success story, ageing societies bring key challenges for health systems stemming from the growing prevalence of chronic diseases, increased likelihood of multiple conditions and need for long-term care.

With recent research estimating the number of new cancer diagnoses to triple by 2050 worldwide due to population ageing, the urgency of adapting the public health response in the face of this demographic transformation is even more glaring within the context of cancer control.

How can cancer services better deal with the complex and heterogenous needs of older populations across the cancer continuum?

What are the policy options countries can take to ensure old age does not become a barrier to equitable access to quality cancer care?

What changes do health systems need to make to support Healthy Ageing and harness the benefits of people living longer and healthier lives?

Following the Special Focus Dialogue on Caring for older cancer patients during COVID-19, this second discussion in the Ageing and Cancer series brings together key experts from international bodies, government, academia and public health to take the ‘long view’ on reshaping cancer control for the needs of ageing societies. • ENSP-ECPC Webinar: Tobacco Treatment Delivery in cancer patients in Europe

        Date: 19 October 2020

        Time: 13:00 to 14:00 CET

        Location: Webinar

We are inviting you to attend our online webinar on Tobacco Treatment Delivery in cancer patients in Europe which will take place on Monday, 19th October 2020 from 13:00 to 14:00 CET

In collaboration with the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention, this symposium aims at addressing the importance of smoking cessation during or after cancer treatment, highlighting the feasibility, availability, cost-effectiveness and efficacy in cancer treatment success and cancer recovery.

Great progress has been recorded in cancer care during the past years. Although, it is well established that approximately 30% of cancer deaths are directly caused by smoking and there are evidence-based interventions including behavioural therapy available which can double or triple the rates of successful quitting, they are often neglected and are not incorporated in cancer treatment and recovery.

Continuing smoking after diagnosis affects the treatment outcomes, increases the mortality rates after treatment and the recurrence of cancer while increases the risk of a new cancer. On the other hand, quitting smoking after the cancer diagnosis can improve the treatment outcomes, prolong survival, and reduce the risk for new cancers.
