BRUSSELS, 15 September. The European Cancer Patients Coalition (ECPC) has announced today that Dr. Lydia Makaroff will begin her role as its new Director. ECPC is based in Brussels, Belgium, and is the largest European cancer patients’ umbrella organisation, representing more than 400 organisations in 46 countries.
“We are very pleased to announce that the ECPC Board has selected Dr. Lydia Makaroff to be the new Director of the organisation”, says Prof. Francesco De Lorenzo, President of ECPC. “Lydia will bring an added value to ECPC with her expertise in the area of cancer research. I am sure she will strengthen our involvement in research projects, increasing the quality of our contribution”, concluded the President of ECPC.
Dr. Makaroff has substantial international experience in research, industry, non-profit management, and work in non-communicable diseases. She will advance the organisation’s current strategic plan and guide its vision of ensuring that all European cancer patients have timely and affordable access to the best treatment and care available. Dr. Makaroff has a PhD in medical research and a MPH in public policy.
“I look forward to serving ECPC members across Europe in a time of great inequalities to cancer treatment and care” says Dr. Makaroff. “I will ensure that our organisation continues to advocate for sustainable and equitable access to state-of-the-art cancer care, provide patient education, support cancer survivors, and participate in patient-centered research. I would like to thank former Director, Ms. Mihaela Militaru for being such an excellent caretaker of the organisation for the past three years, and for her tireless dedication towards transparency, community, and collaboration”.
ECPC was set up in 2003, and works for a Europe of equality, where all European cancer patients have timely and affordable access to the best treatment and care available, throughout their life. ECPC believes that cancer patients are the most important partners in the fight against cancer and against all the cancer-related issues affecting our society. ECPC works for the recognition of cancer patients as partners in their own healthcare and invites policy makers, researchers, doctors and industry to work all together in this direction.
