Director

The European Cancer Patient Coalition, based in Brussels, is seeking to recruit a Director to lead the organisation's varied and ambitious programs.

ECPC works for a Europe of equality, where all European cancer patients have timely and affordable access to the best treatment and care available, throughout their life. ECPC believes that cancer patients are the most important partners in the fight against cancer and against all the cancer-related issues affecting our society. Policy makers, researchers, doctors and industry should recognise cancer patients as co-creators of their own health.

The Director will be required to manage a small highly professional young team, oversee the various projects of the organisation (including EU funded health and research projects), conduct fundraising, establish good working relations with the organisation's sponsors, partners, members and other high level key stakeholders and ensure sound financial management. The Director will work closely and report to the Board, who will decide on strategy and provide supervision.

This position is suitable for an experienced, outgoing, mature and well-educated individual.

JOB OBJECTIVE

The Director is responsible for supporting the development of the organisation's activities in line with the Board's decisions. Their primary task is to ensure that all organisational aspects, including membership capacity-building, project and people management, financial organisation and communications, run smoothly while ensuring the sustainability of ECPC.
  • Reporting directly to the President and the Board
  • Manage the day-to-day affairs of the organisation
  • Participate in Board meetings
  • Ensure that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organisation and important factors influencing it
  • Develop and implement a 3-year strategic plan as well as an annual Action Plan, in close consultation with the Board
  • Oversee the management of all operations including program implementation
  • Evaluate, together with the board, the implementation of programmes and projects
  • Oversee fundraising activities to ensure sustainability
  • Represent the organisation to external audiences through media relations and participation in conferences and forums, after previous consultation with the Board
  • Ensure that ECPC develops programs to regularly inform Members on how to improve their advocacy capacities
  • Develop and cultivate a working environment that attracts, retains and motivates good quality staff.
  • Promote active and broad participation by Members in all areas of ECPC’s work
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with regulations
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field
  • Publicise the activities of the organisation and its programs and goals
  • Establish sound working relationships with stakeholders
  • Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, including staff, interns, contractors, and volunteers
  • Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place
  • Encourage staff development and education
  • Oversee all financial assets and ensure that auditing systems are in place
  • Work with the staff, Audit Committee and the Board in preparing a budget; see that the organisation operates within budget guidelines, and provide timely financial reports to the Board

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in oncology research and policy
  • Broad knowledge and experience of NGO management and of working with patient and/or consumer organisations and high level decision makers;
  • Proven experience working in a highly visible organisation where discretion, confidentiality, professionalism is mandatory;
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills with a minimum of 6 years' continued senior management experience;
  • Good understanding of budget planning and oversight, accounting skills;
  • Proven experience in fund­raising;
  • MBA level education desirable in one of the following: Public Affairs, Communications, International Relations, Law or a relevant Bachelor degree plus relevant professional continuing education;
  • Outstanding verbal and written skills in English language are a key requirement (Native English speaker is preferred). Ability and experience in writing long documents such as reports, position papers, etc.;
  • Fluency in another European language is mandatory;
  • Excellent skills in working with MS Office and visual presentations are required;
  • Willingness and availability to undertake business travel at short notice, work longer hours when needed and assist in all activities of a busy small office.

COMPENSATION

This is a full time position based in Brussels.

Benefits include: Electronic meal vouchers, reimbursement of public transportation costs, health care (hospitalisation and ambulatory care) insurance, group insurance, and insurance for accidents at work.

Vacations: 25 days per year to be taken according to the needs of the office.
